About the Morro Bay National Estuary Program
The Morro Bay National Estuary Program is a non-regulatory, nonprofit organization that brings together citizens, local governments, nonprofits, agencies, and landowners to protect and restore the Morro Bay Estuary.
Morro Bay National Estuary Program staff conducts monitoring and research, restores natural habitats, and educates residents and visitors on how to keep Morro Bay clean and healthy. A clean and healthy Morro Bay means a vibrant local economy, healthy residents, and a flourishing natural environment.
The Estuary Program is not a government agency, and thus has no regulatory authority. The Estuary Program achieves results by closely collaborating with many partners and landowners to accomplish shared goals. This approach has proved to be both efficient and effective for watershed and estuary protection.
Morro Bay was designated a state estuary in 1994 and an “estuary of national significance” in 1995 as a result of a tireless community-based effort to protect this precious resource. The Morro Bay National Estuary Program is one of 28 National Estuary Programs around the country working to safeguard and improve the health of some of our nation’s most important coastal waters. The Morro Bay National Estuary Program is locally managed, but is recognized by the US Environmental Protection Agency, who provides some financial and technical support to each National Estuary Program. The Morro Bay National Estuary Program works on behalf of our local community to make Morro Bay a better place for all of us.
Since 2008, the Estuary Program has leveraged $2.9 million in EPA grant funding into $7.4 million of additional funding – a ratio of 2.5 to 1. These funds come from a variety of private and public sources. The vast majority of these funds are provided to partners and local organizations through grants and collaborative projects.
The Estuary Program relies on diverse funding sources, as well as 100+ volunteers and business that donate their time and services.
